Scandinavian-American Old-time Fiddle Music:

Foot-notes.  A band from Decorah, Iowa that plays Scandinavian-American old-time music for dances and festivals. Beth Hoven Rotto is the lead fiddler, who has also done quite a lot of research into the history of Norwegian-American fiddling in and around Decorah.

LeRoy Larson and the Minnesota Scandinavian Ensemble. A long time provider of Scandinavian-American old-time dance music and original Norwegian-American compositions. Larson is a composer as well as a great banjo player.  Art Bjorngjeld is the current fiddler in the band.

Skålmusik. A band from Minnesota that performs gammeldans music (old dance music from Norway) as well as Scandinavian-American old-time. Besides being a fiddle maker, Paul Wilson plays fiddle in the group.

The Norskedalen Trio.  While this ensemble from Wisconsin doesn't have a Website, it is possible to buy a polka music cd with a few of their tunes from this site.  They play music that emigrants brought from Gudbrandsdalen, Norway as well as music that has become known by Norwegian-Americans in western Wisconsin.  Tip Bagstad, whose family came from Gudbrandsdalen, Norway, is the lead fiddler. Besides this cd, Deep Polka: Dance Music from the Midwest, the group has other cds available.

Voyager Recordings and Publications. This record label specializes in old-time fiddle and traditional acoustic music.  One of their recording artists is Jeff Anderson, a fiddler from Washington state who plays Norwegian-American music that he learned from old recordings of his grandfather.

 American Fiddlers Playing Norwegian Bygdedans Music

Loretta Kelley. One of the premier hardanger fiddlers born in America (and not of Norwegian heritage!).  Although based on the east coast, she travels to various areas of the U.S. for performances. She specializes in music from Telemark, Norway. Kelley was one of Julane's first teachers of the hardanger fiddle.

Andrea Een. Also a former teacher of Julane's. Having been a professor of violin, viola, and hardanger fiddle at St. Olaf College since 1977, Een has received the St. Olav medal from Kind Harald V of Norway for her promotion of greater knowledge of Norwegian culture abroad.  She knows many tunes from Voss, Norway, where she has family roots. She has studied with some of Norway'f finest fiddlers, and she is currently in demand as a teacher and performer of the hardanger fiddle.

Karen Torkelsen Solgård. A former cellist, Karen is one of the few Norwegian-Americans who have taken on the playing of Norwegian traditional music on the hardanger fiddle. She is based out of Minnesota, and she plays gammeldans tunes as well as the older, bygdedans music.

Elizabeth Weis. An ethnomusicologist, Elizabeth (known as Becky by friends) plays both the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle and the Swedish Nyckelharpa.  She currently lives in Minnesota, and is available to give lectures as well as performances.

Hardanger Fiddle Association of America. This group preserves and promotes the Norwegian hardanger fiddle in America, along with the dance that accompanies it.  The main emphasis is on bygdedans music.

Per Anders Buen Garnås. From Telemark, Per Anders is one of the best younger players of the Norwegian hardanger fiddle.  He comes from a family steeped in the tradition. This site has Norwegian text.

Jan Beitohaugen Granli. Jan is also considered to be one of the best young hardanger fiddlers from Norway.  He also has family ties to this traditional music.

Trio Hardanger. Champion fiddlers Åse Teigeland, Frank Rolland, and Knut Hamre base their arrangements on traditional melodies from the area of Hardanger, in Norway.  Hardanger is the region in Norway that the hardanger fiddle was named for.  New, interesting harmonies are created in their group. Julane has had Frank Rolland as a teacher in 2001.

Per Sæmund Bjørkum. Per Sæmund plays the conventional fiddle, and he is an expert in the music of Gudbrandsdalen, Norway.  He also is a great violinist, and teaches violin and folk music in Oslo at a university there.  He has also been a teacher of Julane's. This site has an excerpt about him and one of his cds, Berg og Vatn (Mountain and Water).

Ånon Egeland. Ånon is a great multi-instrumentalist.  He plays guitar, English citern, the oud, a variety of flutes, and he is known as one of the best jaw harp players in Norway.  Besides this, he is also famous as a fiddler.  He plays mostly tunes from Agder, in Norway, on both the hardanger fiddle and the conventional fiddle. He is one of the teachers that Julane has learned most from. His latest CD is fantastic.  It can be bought from this site.

Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum. This museum is located in Decorah, Iowa, which was a large settlement area for Norwegian-Americans.  It is home to the yearly summer festival called Nordic Fest.

Sylvain Lacroix, French Canadian dulcimer player.  Based out of Quebec, Lacroix performs medieval French music as well as traditional Quebecois music on many styles of dulcimers.  Julane recorded with Sylvain for a CD that will be released soon.
